Proteas Boost Domestic Opener as Red Ball Season Gets Rolling

The return of domestic first class cricket will have an added edge this week, with three Proteas joining the defending champions as South Africa’s red ball season gets under way.

The newly rebranded 1st Class Series begins on Thursday, with DP World Lions opening their title defence against Boland at the Wanderers. Temba Bavuma, Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder are expected to feature for the Johannesburg side, giving Russell Domingo’s team considerable international experience at the start of the campaign.

For the Proteas, the fixture offers a chance for meaningful time in the middle ahead of a demanding international summer. For the Lions, it is the first opportunity to begin another title campaign after dominating the competition over the past three seasons.

The Lions beat the Dafabet Warriors by eight wickets in last season’s final in February to secure their third championship in three years, having shared the title the previous season.

That consistency has not happened by accident. Bowling coach Allan Donald believes the Lions’ depth and relentless focus on their standards have been central to their success.

“We work tirelessly on our standards,” Donald said. “We are very lucky that we’ve got the depth that we’ve got at the DP World Lions.”

The challenge now is maintaining that level with every other side intent on ending their run.

“You sit every season and you think, ‘What can I do better? What are the things we need to focus on to make us an even better side?’ And the rest of the country have got you fair and square in the crosshairs,” Donald said.

The Lions are not the only team with ambitions of making a statement in the opening round.

The Momentum Multiply Titans begin at SuperSport Park against the Hollywoodbets Dolphins, with the hosts looking to put a disappointing seventh place finish last season behind them.

At Newlands, the YesPlay Western Province Cobras face the Warriors, who will return to action with the memory of last season’s final still fresh. The Warriors came within one match of securing their first title and will want to turn that near miss into something more substantial this time.

There is also a fresh face back in Division 1. The Flexbrands Knights earned promotion after their Division 2 campaign and will begin their return against the North West Dragons in Bloemfontein.

They have added several players to strengthen the squad, including Under 19 standout Ntando Soni from the Warriors, Nico van Zyl from Border, Jono Bird from Western Province and Emmanuel Motswiri from Limpopo.

Lesego Senokwane has also returned from the Titans after previously finishing as their leading run scorer in the 4 Day Series two seasons ago.

The changes extend beyond the playing squads. CSA’s revamped domestic structure means each of the eight Division 1 teams will play 10 matches this season, three more than in previous campaigns.

The expanded programme will run across 12 rounds, with the final scheduled to begin on 26 April 2027.

Before that, the spotlight falls on the Wanderers, where the defending champions will have three of the country’s leading Test players in their ranks.

Domestic cricket has always been one of South Africa’s most important proving grounds. This week, with the Proteas back in the middle and a new season beginning, it gets another chance to show why.
